Our June Mission Project, CPC MEDICAL DEBT REDUCTION INITIATIVE FOR THE CAROLINAS, was announced last Sunday during the worship service. This initiative has taken a couple of years to come together. Undue Medical Debt, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, has agreed to work with us on a package involving Avery, Mitchell, and McDowell counties in North Carolina. The return on investment is astonishing. For each dollar gift, $200 of medical debt can be retired. Geographically targeted initiatives such as this require a $10,000 minimum gift which an anonymous donor will make. The Session has approved a contribution of $1,000 from our mission. With the $11,000 donation, the current numbers indicate we will retire well over $2 million of medical debt. A more detailed explanation is attached to the Midweek News email.

Our 2024 Summer Series of Speakers and Music Concerts begins on Tuesday, June 18, at 7 p.m., in the CPC Church Sanctuary with Dr. Karl Campbell, Professor of History, Appalachian State University presenting “The Roaring 20s in North Carolina.” The 1920s are remembered as a time of contrasts. New inventions such as the automobile, airplane, radio, and motion pictures--and new ideas from scholars like Freud, Marx, and Darwin--stimulated a generation of modern scholars, writers, artists and even flappers. But the 1920s also marked a period of growing conservatism. Many Americans fought to defend traditional values through the anti-evolution movement, the rise of fundamentalism, prohibition, and the rebirth of the K.K.K. Dr. Karl Campbell will discuss the roaring twenties in North Carolina by analyzing three specific events: the politics of Governor Cam Morrison, changes in courtship practices (dating), and the fight over teaching Darwinism. A complete schedule of the 2024 Summer Series is attached to the Midweek News e-mail.
Thank you to Charlotte Davila for hosting the CPC Women’s Gathering at her home this past Thursday. It was wonderful.
The CPC Finance Committee wants the congregation to be aware that we need $18,000 each month to keep our church operating. The last couple of months we have been in the red. Our June Mission Project is strengthening our General Fund. If you can give a little extra this month, it would be a great blessing. You can still designate your offering if you want your contribution to go to a specific ministry or mission.
The Congregational Fellowship Committee needs volunteers to host Coffee Hour after worship on the first and second Sundays of the month this summer. If you would like to help, you can choose a date or two or serve once a month. Please contact Gayle Culbreath at:

A Thank you note from Diane Rydell: Dear Church Family, “Thank you” seems so inadequate for honoring and gifting me on Sunday. (The flowers as so lovely.) Your kindness and caring have been so appreciated the past couple of years and made me truly a part of you. Even though I was “filling a need’ you went beyond. Much love and honor are yours, Diane.
